Variações Goldberg by J.S. Bach

Description

Pedro Burmester revisits J.S. Bach’s Variações Goldberg , and launches a new recording of that piece during this concert, part of a tour that began in July and will continue into 2025. Written in 1741 for Count Hermann Karl von Keyserling and played to him by harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb, after whom it was named, this piece is a major illustration of the “variation” formal technique. It consists of an aria, which is followed by thirty variations before returning to it at the end. A milestone in the repertoire for keyboard instruments, is a challenge to any performer, be it in its original version for harpsichord, or in later adaptations for piano or string trio, amongst others. In this technically complex piece, Bach combines his masterful grasp of contrapuntal composition with a near-mathematical approach to create an intellectually and emotionally compelling whole. Thirty-two years after recording the Goldberg Variations for EMI Classics, Burmester publishes a new reading of it in Artway Next; its artistic relevance is something we will be able to witness live in this concert.
