Rei Édipo

Description

With Rei Édipo [Oedipus Rex], Sophocles brought ambivalence to Greek tragedy. The play can be read as a detective story – who murdered Laius and brought evil upon Thebes? – where Oedipus finds himself between two forces: the gods’ prophecies and his self-knowledge. Slovenian stage director Vito Taufer brings this contemporary version of the tragedy to a film noir bar setting, in a production of the Yugoslav Drama Theatre. Prophecies, secrets and responsibilities float amidst clouds of smoke, light and shadow, songs and whiskey. Oedipus becomes a tragic hero once he gains awareness of his identity. By putting free will and divinely appointed fate side by side, this production sends out a question concerning our present time: are our rulers’ decisions based on reason and knowledge, or do they simply follow crystallised, obsolete notions?
