Description
After creating A Mina [The Mine] (2022), a production based on stories concerning the São Pedro da Cova coal mine and the lives of the people who worked there, the Hotel Europa Company decided to dig deeper, which yielded a new play: Tribunal Mina [Mine Tribunal] (2023). This creation is focused on the environmental problems caused by the fact that in 2001 the mine’s old galleries were used to stock tons of toxic waste from Siderurgia Nacional (an iron and steel company), which have yet to be fully removed. Both plays have now returned to the surface: they can be viewed separately, or together in a single session. As usual in its work, the Hotel Europa Company explores the possibilities of documentary theatre, using “actors” from the local community and combining the personal stories of the miners and their families with various types of documentary records. In a time in which new mines (now of lithium, instead of coal) are being planned, these stories must be made known.
